Co Flex Recovery time

This surgery is a fairly new surgery performed by a Neurosurgeon and has had great success since its inception in October 2012. A CoFlex Device is a single titanium implant that goes in the back of your spine to treat Spinal Stenosis (the narrowing of the Spinal Canal). This device takes the load of the spinous process in order to give your disc space. It is usually performed with a decompression surgery (Micro-Discectomy). The major benefit of the CoFlex surgery is that the device is strong enough to where you will not have to fuse your spine. This keeps your spine to still maintain its ability to move, unlike a Spinal Fusion where the vertebrae are fused together with metal plates and screws.

How Does Co Flex Surgery Work?

This surgery is performed under general anesthesia and is considered “minimally invasive” due to the incision being small. During this procedure you will be on your back. The neurosurgeon will make a small incision in the area of your back where he will implant the titanium device (co flex) After the surgeon will implant the u shaped CoFlex device in between the two levels where you have disc problems. This device which comes in a variety of sizes will keep your spine stable without having to fuse your vertebrae together. In fact it is the first and only motion preserving surgery to treat severe spinal stenosis.

Why Choose Co Flex?

If you are a candidate for co flex surgery the benefits versus a Spinal Fusion is clear.

  • Over 94% of patients were happy with their results after CoFlex Surgery
  • The CoFlex Surgery is also a faster surgery versus a Spinal Fusion meaning you will have to be under anesthesia for a less amount of time
  • Patients with CoFlex Surgery has also recovered faster from their back pain symptoms than patients that have had a Spinal Fusion
  • Patients also do not have to worry about the top of bottom levels of where they had the Spinal Fusion having to be fused
  • The range of motion is still kept versus a Spinal Fusion

Instructions for CoFlex Surgery Recovery

This procedure is a neurological procedure done in one of our surgery centers in Central Florida. After your surgery you will be put into the postoperative recovery area where our team of nurses will monitor you. They will do simple tests such as checking your blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate.

Instructions from your nurse:

  • Post Operative Narcotics may be prescribed, but not for longer than a week
  • The nurse will contact your surgeon to see if physical therapy will be prescribed
  • You will be released the same day after your surgery is completed
  • A post operative appointment which is set 4-6 weeks after your surgery will be given to you to see how the healing process is coming along

Restrictions:

  • Anti-Inflammatory drugs should be avoided due to the ability for them to cause bleeding and interference with the healing process
  • Do not lift heavy objects
Avoid sitting down for long periods of time
  • Avoid Smoking
  • Physical activity such as household chores or sports should be avoided.

The recovery time after you have been released from our outpatient surgery center will be around 6 weeks. This is shorter than the normal 3-6 month recovery time for a Spinal Fusion due to bone not having to form on the fusion and the CoFlex device still being able to keep your spine a working joint. In a study, 85% of patients felt significant pain relief after six weeks of their surgery.

Questions about CoFlex Surgery Recovery

  1. How long after the CoFlex implantation should I expect to stay in the hospital?
    • Answer: Most patients undergoing a CoFlex implantation procedure may expect to be discharged either on the same day or after a short overnight stay. However, the exact duration may vary depending on individual circumstances, such as the patient’s overall health, any complications during surgery, or the surgeon’s preference.
  2. What type of pain, discomfort, or sensations can I anticipate in the initial days following the CoFlex procedure? Are there specific pain management strategies you recommend?
    • Answer: Some post-operative pain or discomfort is typical after CoFlex implantation, mostly at the incision site or surrounding muscles. This pain usually subsides within a week or two. Pain management may include prescribed pain medications, over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, and occasionally muscle relaxants. Always use medications as directed by your healthcare provider.
  3. Are there specific movement or activity restrictions I should adhere to during the CoFlex recovery period? How long will these restrictions last?
    • Answer: Patients are generally advised to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and excessive bending or twisting for the first few weeks following surgery. Walking and light activities are encouraged. Your surgeon will provide specific guidelines based on the details of your procedure and individual healing progress.
  4. When is it safe for me to return to regular daily activities such as driving, lifting objects, or performing household chores following the CoFlex surgery?
    • Answer: Most patients can gradually resume daily activities within 2-6 weeks post-operation, depending on their recovery progress. Driving might be permissible after a week or two, but it’s crucial to ensure you’re off pain medications that can impair your reflexes or judgment. Always consult with your surgeon for personalized recommendations.
  5. Will I need to participate in physical therapy or rehabilitation exercises as part of my CoFlex recovery? If so, when can I start, and what might this regimen involve?
    • Answer: Physical therapy is often recommended to strengthen the back muscles and enhance mobility. Usually, therapy can begin a few weeks after the surgery, once the initial healing has occurred. The regimen typically includes stretches, strengthening exercises, and posture training.
  6. How should I care for the incision site to prevent complications or infection, and are there signs I should watch for that might indicate an issue with the implant?
    • Answer: The incision site should be kept clean and dry. Initially, avoid submerging it in water, like in baths or pools. Watch for signs of infection such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, discharge, or if you develop a fever. As for the implant, unusual pain or changes in mobility might indicate an issue, and you should consult with your surgeon if such symptoms arise.
  7. How often will I need follow-up visits post-surgery, and what will these check-ups involve regarding monitoring the position and functionality of the CoFlex device?
    • Answer: Typically, a first follow-up is scheduled a few weeks after the surgery. Subsequent visits might be at 3 months, 6 months, and then annually. During these check-ups, your surgeon will assess your healing, evaluate pain levels, and may order X-rays or other imaging to ensure the CoFlex device remains in its optimal position.
